Privacy Policy

StudentVote.org is a project of the Student PIRGs and is intended to serve as a tool to inform users about issues related to voting. We respect your privacy and are committed to maintaining your confidence and trust. Our policy regarding the privacy of your personal information is as follows:

Information We Collect
The information we collect from you and about you on this Website depends on how you use the Website and the information you provide to us. We collect information in three main ways: (1) information you choose to provide to us; (2) information we collect automatically through technology when you use the Website; and (3) information we collect from others.

Information You Provide to Us
Some parts of the Website may ask for your name, your address, your email address, your phone number and other information. Providing this information is always optional, but you may not be able to use some features or take certain actions on the site without providing it.

Information that Is Passively and Automatically Collected
When you visit the Website, we may automatically receive and record information from your computer or mobile device. This information allows us to understand how people are navigating and using our Website and how we can improve your experience based on the information we collect. The types of information we may collect include, by way of example only, your IP address, browser type, browser language, operating system, state or country from which you accessed the Website, software and hardware attributes (including device IDs), referring and exit pages and URLs, platform type, the number of clicks, files you download, pages viewed, the amount of time spent on particular pages, the date and time you used the Website, error logs and other similar information. From your IP address, we may be able to infer your general location (e.g., city and state or postal code).

We may use third-party analytics providers and technologies, such as cookies, web beacons, tracking pixels, or gifs, to help us collect the data described above. We use the term “cookie” in the broad sense to include all similar techniques and technologies. A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your computer or device when you visit a website that stores certain information about your website usage. For example, cookies enable us to recognize your computer; store your preferences and settings; enhance your user experience by delivering content specific to your interests; perform searches and analytics; and assist with security administrative functions. These cookies allow us to provide you with a more focused user-experience (for example, by allowing us to display specific information, such as the name of your U.S. Representative, based on your state or zip code) and to improve your experience of this site.

You can change your own browser settings to notify you when a cookie is being set or updated, or to block cookies altogether. If you disable cookies, some functionality of the Website may be impaired.

Information We Collect from Others
We may receive additional information about you from third parties and other sources, such as from public records, marketers, researchers, analysts, social media networks, data aggregators, and other organizations. We may combine this information with information we collect directly from you to derive your possible interests and to provide a more relevant experience for you and to improve the Website.

How we Use and Protect Your Personal Information
Any personal information we collect is intended to help us improve the content of our site, to provide you with accurate information about your elected officials and the interactions you take part in, to facilitate a contribution, to enhance our advocacy and organization-building activities, and to provide decision-makers with necessary information about who is speaking out on a particular issue. We may also provide this information to groups in our public interest network, or to other organizations to the extent that we believe doing so will further our organizational mission. If you wish to opt out of having your information exchanged with other organizations you may contact us

Your personal information will be encrypted through SSL/HTTPS, the industry standard technology used to protect sensitive data.

We sometimes contract with third-party vendors to perform functions including but not limited to data processing and credit card processing. These third parties have access to your personal information only as needed to perform their services for us and are under legal obligation not to disclose that information or otherwise jeopardize its security.

In such circumstances, the third-party’s privacy policy and terms apply as to how it collects and processes the information you provide.

If you take action, sign up for email alerts, or make a financial contribution online, or interact with us in other ways, you may receive periodic communications including but not limited to email, letters, newsletters and an annual report. At any time, you can unsubscribe from these communications by following the directions included in the communication or by contacting us.

After taking some actions online, you may be given the option to send a message to your friends, inviting them to take action as well. If you send a message to a friend, your name and email will be included in that message. Your friend will not receive communications from us unless he or she joins, takes action, or makes a contribution.

Your California Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident and have provided personal information to us, you are entitled by California law to request information regarding certain categories of personal information we share with third parties for their direct marketing purposes. Within 30 days of receiving such a request, we will provide a response listing the categories of personal information disclosed to third parties, along with the names and addresses of those third parties, for their own direct marketing purposes during the previous year. This request may be made no more than once per calendar year, and we reserve our right not to respond to requests submitted to addresses other than the address specified on the linked page.

Your Colorado Privacy Rights
If you are a Colorado resident, you are entitled by Colorado law to: opt out of having your personal information exchanged with other organizations; access, correct, or delete your personal information; or obtain your personal information in a postable and readily usable format, by contacting us. You may also designate another person to act on your behalf as your authorized agent with respect to these rights. Before completing your request, we may request additional documentation or information solely for the purpose of verifying your identity and authorization of your designated authorized agent. You may appeal our response to your request by contacting us with an explanation as to why you believe our response was not justified. Following the receipt of your appeal, we will respond and provide a written explanation of our final decision. If you disagree with this decision, you may contact the attorney general.

If you want to submit requests to opt-out of the sale of personal data or the targeted advertising via a user-enabled global privacy control, like the Global Privacy Control (“GPC”), you are free to do so and we will abide by such request. The GPC consists of a setting or extension in the browser or mobile device and acts as a mechanism that websites can use to indicate they support the GPC signal. If you want to use GPC, you can download and enable it via a participating browser or browser extension. More information about downloading GPC is available here.
