Berkeley City Council is set to consider an item at its Tuesday meeting that would “initiate a public process to inform residents and businesses” that the council is seriously considering adopting a ban on single-use plastic bags.
CALPIRG held a press conference Wednesday morning to bring attention to their goal of banning plastic bags in the city of Berkeley, and eventually the whole state.
The name Textbook Rebellion may seem a bit extreme, but IU students passing by the rally on their way to classes were eager to stop and sign petition protesting high textbook fees. Nicole Allen helped organize the event that is part of a national effort to reduce textbook costs.
On September 12th, the US Department of Education released the official FY 2009 cohort default rates on student loans. The number of students who defaulted within two years of entering repayment increased to 8.8%, up from 4.5% in FY 2003 and 7% in FY 2008.
High textbook prices have caused junior and sociology major Kate Lavery to struggle in her classes.

TALLAHASSEE — Florida will have fewer early voting days, and voters will have a harder time updating their registrations at the polls, under a fiercely debated elections bill that Gov. Rick Scott signed into law on Thursday.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Last year Carley Sattler helped register hundreds of voters at Florida State University.
“A lot of students weren’t even aware that there were elections,” she said at the time.
Sattler is the Chapter Chair of FSU Public Interest Research Group and regularly participates in voter registration drives. But she may stop signing up voters because of changes in Florida’s elections laws.
